Albany

Albany (pop. 874,304), capital of New York since 1797 and seat of Albany County, located on the west bank of the Hudson River about 145 mi (233 km) north of New York City. An important industrial center, Albany's products include chemicals, paper, and textiles. Many people are also employed in state and county government offices. The opening of the Erie and Champlain canals in the 1820s and the first railroad connection with Schenectady in 1831 established Albany's position as a commercial and shipping center.
