Alcock and Brown



Alcock and Brown, pioneer British aviators, who made the first nonstop flight across the Atlantic Ocean in 1919. Pilot Sir John William Alcock (1892–1919) and navigator Sir Arthur Whitten Brown (1886–1948) began their transatlantic flight near St. John's, Newfoundland, in a twin-engine, converted bomber, landing in a bog near Clifden, Ireland, the next day, having traveled 1,950 mi (3,138 km).
