Alexandria

Alexandria (pop. 105,000), city and port of entry in Virginia, located on the Potomac River. The home of Robert E. Lee, the city was, in part, designed by George Washington. From 1791 to 1846 it was part of the capital district. The Lee home, Arlington House, is now the site of Arlington National Cemetery. Predominantly a residential suburb of the nation's capital, Alexandria also has railroad yards and produces structural steel, chemicals, and fertilizers.
