Alexandria



Alexandria (pop. 3,295,000), chief port and second-largest city of Egypt. Founded by Alexander the Great c. 332 B.C., it was the capital of Ptolomaic Egypt and a center of trade and learning in the Hellenistic and Roman worlds. The city has grown into Egypt's principal channel for foreign trade.
