Alexandrian Library

Alexandrian Library, in antiquity, the greatest collection of manuscripts, first assembled in the 3rd century B.C. The library, containing more than 400,000 scrolls, was housed in Alexandria, Egypt. It was probably destroyed in stages during sieges starting with Julius Caesar's in 47 B.C.; its destruction is thought to have been complete by 400 A.D.
