Washington Allston



Allston, Washington (1779–1843), U.S. painter. After studying in London and Rome, he lived in the Boston area. He was noted for paintings on biblical and classical themes, such as Belshazzar's Feast and The Deluge. He was one of the first romantics in the United States to show a preference for classical landscapes in the style of Claude Lorrain and Salvator Rosa.
