Luis Walter Alvarez



Alvarez, Luis Walter (1911–88), U.S. physicist awarded the 1968 Nobel Prize for physics for work on subatomic particles, including the discovery of transient resonance particles. He helped develop much of the hardware of nuclear physics. During World War II he worked on the development of radar and on the Manhattan (atomic bomb) Project.
