Jonathan Dayton



Dayton, Jonathan (1760–1824), U.S. soldier and politician, youngest signer of the Constitution (1787). He was a congressional representative (1791–99), Speaker of the House (1795–99), and U.S. senator from New Jersey (1799–1805). An associate of Vice President Aaron Burr, Dayton was charged with treason in 1807 but was never brought to trial.
