Ferdinand – Victor – Eugène Delacroix

Delacroix, Ferdinand – Victor – Eugène (1798–1863), French painter whose themes are typical of Romanticism. Such early works as The Massacre of Chios (1824) were influenced by Gericault, but his mastery of rich color schemes and handling of paint were largely learned from Rubens, as shown by Death of Sardanapalus (1827), The Justice of Trajan (1840), and the many official decorative schemes he undertook. His frescoes for Saint-Sulpice, Paris, influenced impressionism.
