Delhi sultanate

Delhi sultanate, first Muslim empire in India (1192–1398). Established by Qutb ud-Din, a general serving Muhammad of Ghor, the ruler of Afghanistan, the sultanate reached its height in the early 1300s, when it dominated the subcontinent. The sultans constantly battled rival Hindu and Buddhist kings and successfully shielded India from Mongol invasion until 1398, when Delhi was sacked by Tamerlane. That ended the empire, although a sultan continued to rule in Delhi until 1526, when Babur, a descendant of Tamerlane, ousted the sultan and founded the Mogul Empire.
