Dorothea Lynde Dix
Dix, Dorothea Lynde (1802–87), U.S. social reformer and crusader for the humane and scientific treatment of mental illness. Shocked to see mentally sick people in jail, in 1841 she launched a successful campaign to establish mental hospitals in the United States, Canada, and Europe.
