Karl Doenitz



Doenitz, Karl (1891–1980), German admiral, head of the World War II U-boat service and later commander in chief of the German navy (1943–5). On Hitler's death in 1945 he became head of state and subsequently surrendered to the Allies. He was tried for war crimes at Nuremberg and served 10 years in prison.
