Douala



Douala (pop. 852,700), largest city and major port of Cameroon, west central Africa, on the Wuori River, near the Gulf of Guinea. A commercial and transportation center, its chief economic activities are shipping and related businesses. Developed as a center of slave trade after the Portuguese arrived in 1472, it was later ruled by the Germans and then by the French.
