Dubuque
Dubuque (pop. 86,403), city in eastern Iowa, seat of Dubuque County. Dubuque is a Mississippi River outlet for a large agricultural area and a thriving industrial center, producing farm machinery, furniture, and meat products. The city is named for Julien Dubuque, a French Canadian who began mining lead locally about 1788. Dubuque received its charter in 1841. Its educational institutions include Dubuque University, known for its agricultural school.
