William Dunlap
Dunlap, William (1766–1839), U.S. dramatist. Dunlap wrote the first U.S. play based on native material, Andre (1798). He also adapted plays from French and German. His History of the American Theatre (1832) is the earliest historical record of the American stage. Also a painter, Dunlap was a founder of the National Academy of Design, a New York art institution.
