Durham
Durham (pop. 136,611), city in north central North Carolina. By 1900 Durham was a major manufacturing center for the tobacco industry. The Duke family of Durham played a central role in the development of the tobacco industry. Durham became an educational center after James Buchanan Duke founded Duke University in 1924.
