Dysentery



Dysentery, group of diseases characterized by inflammation of the colon resulting in pain, spasm of the rectum, intense diarrhea, and the frequent passage of small amounts of mucus and blood, with symptoms of generalized poisoning of the body. Amoebic dysentery is caused by amoebas and treated with amoebicides. Bacillary dysentery is caused by bacteria and is treated with antibiotics.
