Gertrude Caroline Ederle

Ederle, Gertrude Caroline (1906– ), U.S. swimmer, the first woman to swim the English Channel. She broke all previous records, crossing the 35 mi (56.3 km) from France to England on Aug. 6, 1926, in 14 hr 39 min.
