Sarah Emma Evelyn Edmonds



Edmonds, Sarah Emma Evelyn (1841–98), Civil War soldier who used the name Frank Thompson and a male disguise to serve as nurse, messenger, and spy for the Union Army, 1861–63. In 1865 she authored Nurse and Spy in the Union Army, a fictionalized account of her experiences. After petitioning Congress she was granted a veteran's pension (1884), and became the only woman member of the Grand Army of the Republic (1897), a Union Army veterans' organization.
