Elephant bird

Elephant bird, extinct, flightless bird (genus Aepyornis) of Madagascar. Elephant birds were like massive ostriches, up to 10 ft (3 m) tall, with eggs over 1 ft (0.3 m) long. They may have been the origin of the legend of the giant roc bird.
