John Eliot



Eliot, John (1604–90), Puritan clergyman. Born in England, he emigrated to Massachusetts in 1631 and devoted himself to the conversion of local Native Americans. He translated the Bible into an Algonquian language (1661–63) and wrote Indian Primer (1669).
