Elizabeth



Elizabeth (pop. 106,201), city in northeastern New Jersey, seat of Union County. An important port, it stands on Newark Bay, 12 mi (19.3 km) southwest of New York City. Products include sewing machines, toys, and chemicals. New Jersey's oldest English settlement, Elizabeth originated in 1664 and still has some colonial buildings. In 1746 Elizabeth became the first site of the College of New Jersey (later Princeton University). Its industrial development began in earnest in 1873, when the Singer Sewing Machine Company made its headquarters there. Other large industrial plants soon followed.
