Lincoln Ellsworth



Ellsworth, Lincoln (1880–1951), U.S. explorer and scientist. In 1925 he made the transpolar flight with the Amundsen expedition. The following year he flew from the Spitsbergen archipelago in the dirigible Norge across the North Pole to Alaska. In 1936 Ellsworth made the first flight across Antarctica, traveling 2,300 mi (3,700 km) in a single-engine airplane.
