Oliver Ellsworth

Ellsworth, Oliver (1745–1807), chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court (1796–1800). At the Constitutional Convention of 1787 he proposed the Connecticut Compromise, which balanced the legislative representation of the large and small states by establishing the 2 Houses of Congress. As U.S. senator he was responsible for establishing the federal court system.
