Empedocles
Empedocles (c.495–c.435 B.C.), Greek philosopher who lived in Sicily. He invented the theory that the universe was composed of 4 fundamental elements: earth, air, fire, and water. In medicine he taught that good health consisted of a balance of the 4 bodily “humors,” corresponding to the 4 elements.
