English toy spaniel, small dog, originally bred in Asia, which became popular with the English aristocracy in the 17th century. On the average, toy spaniels stand 10 in (25 cm) at the shoulder and weigh from 9 to 12 lb (4.1 to 5.4 kg). The King Charles is black and tan; the Prince Charles is black, tan, and white; the Blenheim is red and white; and the Ruby is red.
