Erythromycin
Erythromycin, antibiotic synthesized by the soil bacterium Streptomyces erythreus. Discovered in 1952, erythromycin is used to treat staphylococcus and streptococcus infections, meningitis, scarlet fever, and Legionnaires' disease. It is also helpful in treating patients who are allergic to penicillin.
