Escape velocity

Escape velocity, speed an object must reach in order to break free from the gravitational pull of a massive body, such as the earth, moon, or sun. The escape velocity depends upon the mass of the body and the distance of the moving object from it. The escape velocity from the earth's surface is about 7 mi/sec (11.3 km/sec).
