Essene

Essene, member of an ascetic Jewish sect that flourished in Palestine around the time of the birth of Jesus. Living in their own communities, the Essenes generally withdrew from public life, appearing only occasionally to warn others that the end of the world was at hand. Some scholars believe that the Dead Sea Scrolls belonged to an Essene group.
