Etymology

Etymology, study of the origin and evolution of words. The history of language was first seriously studied in the 19th century. This led to the comparative analysis of languages that turned out to be related. Etymologists began to concentrate on the evolution of words within families of languages, especially examining changes in meaning according to context.
