Finch, songbird of the family Frangillidae, typified by stout, conical bills adapted for opening seeds. Found year round and worldwide, except Australia, these highly developed birds are classified as triangular-billed (sparrow, canary, bullfinch, goldfinch); cross-mandibled (crossbill); or round-billed (cardinal).
