Flowering maple
Flowering maple, or Chinese bell flower, name for a number of trees and shrubs of the mallow family, and not, in fact, maples. Flowering maples come from southern Asia and South America. Some are now naturalized in North America. One, the velvetleaf, is cultivated for its fibers, called “China jute,” used in rugmaking.
