Dame Margot Fonteyn



Fonteyn, Dame Margot (1919–91), English prima ballerina of the Royal Ballet. Before World War II she had danced leads in Giselle, Swan Lake, and The Sleeping Beauty, and Frederick Ashton had begun choreographing works for her. She retired from the Royal Ballet in 1959 but continued to appear as a guest star, and in 1962 she formed a dance partnership with Rudolf Nureyev that won new international fame for both of them.
