Fort Monroe
Fort Monroe, U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command headquarters near Norfolk, Va. Used as a fortification since l609, the fort was named after President Monroe in 1832 when it was rebuilt by Robert E. Lee. Edgar Allan Poe, the poet, served at Fort Monroe before going to West Point, and Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederacy, was imprisoned at this fort after the Civil War.
