Frederick William

Frederick William (1620–88), elector of Brandenburg from 1640, known as the Great Elector. By skillful shifting of alliances in an attempt to establish a balance of power, he was able to shield his country from the worst of the Thirty Years War and add Prussia to Brandenburg (1660). This and the modern army he created laid the foundations for the country's future predominance in Germany.
