Free Soil Party
Free Soil Party, short-lived U.S. coalition party formed in New York in 1848 to oppose the extension of slavery into the territories gained after the Mexican-American War. It attracted many famous men, including President Martin Van Buren, who was its first presidential candidate, but polled few votes in the 1848 and 1852 elections, and the party merged with the Republican Party in 1854.
