French West Africa, federation of 8 French overseas territories, 1895–1959. Its members were Dahomey (now Benin), French Guinea (now Guinea), Ivory Coast, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal, Sudan (now Mali), and Upper Volta (now Burkina Faso), now independent countries.
