Philip Freneau
Freneau, Philip (1752–1832), U.S. journalist and poet. His poem “The British Prison Ship” (1781) was inspired by his experiences after being captured while running the British blockade. Other poems included “The Wild Honeysuckle” (1786) and “The Indian Burying Ground” (1788). Freneau was also the editor (1791–93) of the National Gazette, an anti-Federalist Party newspaper.
