Frontenac, Louis de Baude, Comte de Palluau et de (1620–98), French soldier and governor of New France (1672–82 and 1689–98). Recalled to France in 1682 after his controversial handling of relations with Native Americans, he returned in 1689. In the first French and Indian War he successfully held Quebec against the English. He maintained the French position in New France up to the Treaty of Ryswick (1697).
