Elizabeth Gurney Fry
Fry, Elizabeth Gurney (1780–1845), British Quaker philanthropist whose inspections of prisons throughout Britain and Europe led to great advances in the treatment of the imprisoned and the insane. Her proposed reforms of London's notorious Newgate prison, including segregation of the sexes and the provision of employment and religious instruction, were largely accepted.
