James William Fulbright
Fulbright, James William (1905–95), U.S. political leader and lawyer, initiator of the Fulbright Act (1946), providing for international exchange of students and teachers. Fulbright was elected to the House of Representatives in 1942, and served in the Senate (1944–75). He was chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee (1959–74), becoming an outspoken critic of U.S. policy in Vietnam.
