Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin
Gagarin, Yuri Alekseyevich (1934–68), Soviet cosmonaut, first human in space. His capsule, Vostok 1, was launched on Apr. 12, 1961, and orbited the earth once. A deputy to the Supreme Soviet from 1962, he died in a plane crash.
