William Lloyd Garrison



Garrison, William Lloyd (1805–79), leader of the U.S. abolitionist movement. From 1831–65 he published The Liberator, an influential crusading journal that opposed slavery, war, and capital punishment and supported temperance and women's rights. He was president of the American Anti-Slavery Society (1843–65), which he helped found in 1833.
