Gaucho

Gaucho, cowboy of the South American pampas (prairies). Gauchos flourished in the 18th and 19th centuries; they were skilled riders, usually employed to herd cattle. Their function ceased with the fencing of the pampas and reorganization of the cattle industry, but like the U.S. cowboys they survived as local folk heroes.
