German shepherd dog
German shepherd dog, breed of dog developed in Germany in the early 1900s to be a herder. Also called a German police dog, it is now used in police and military work and as a guide dog. German shepherds are muscular, with large, pointed ears, long snouts, and dense black, gray, or tan coats. They stand about 24 in (61 cm) and weigh 60–85 lb (27–39 kg).
