John Herschel Glenn Jr.

Glenn, John Herschel, Jr. (1921– ), U.S. astronaut and senator. On Feb. 20, 1962, in the space capsule Friendship 7, he orbited the earth 3 times. Active in Ohio politics after retiring from the U.S. Marines as a colonel, he was first elected a Democratic senator in 1974. He was an unsuccessful candidate for the 1984 presidential nomination.
