Gooseberry



Gooseberry, shrub (genus Ribes) bearing purple berries, originally found growing wild in southern Europe and North Africa. First cultivated in the 17th century, the berries are eaten fresh or used in pies, sauces, or preserves. Cultivation of the shrubs are banned by law in some states because they are host to blister rust disease.
