Gordian knot
Gordian knot, in Greek mythology, an intricate knot by which King Gordius of Phrygia joined the yoke and pole of an oxcart. A prophecy holding that anyone undoing the knot would rule all Asia came true when Alexander the Great severed the knot with his sword.
