Granada



Granada, name of a province of southeastern Spain and of the capital (pop. 255,200) of that province. The Moorish sovereignty of that name was overtaken by Ferdinand and Isabella's armies in 1492. In the 1800s it was divided into the 3 provinces of Granada, Málaga, and Almería. The province of Granada is 4,838 sq mi (12,530 sq km). It is rich in minerals and has fertile soil. The Alhambra, a Moorish fortress and palace, and the palace of Charles V, a Holy Roman emperor, are the city's major tourist attractions.
