Gypsy moth

Gypsy moth (Porthetria dispar), winged insect originating in Europe and later introduced to North America. In the New World, in the absence of natural enemies, it has become a serious pest; the caterpillars feed on the leaves of the deciduous trees, particularly fruit trees, and their occasional mass outbreaks can lead to complete defoliation.
